Did I Hear That Right?

I wanted to write a very short post on the art of using music effectively in media. When done correctly it can lift an acceptable piece of work and create something extraordinary.

I witnessed one such example on TV the other night. Have you ever watched Stalker?

It's an episodic US crime drama which centres upon the work of the LAPD's Threat Assessment Unit.

It weaves music through its narrative brilliantly, making a habit of using songs which an audience will recognise slowly through the lyrics which have been turned on their head completely in chillingly powerful covers.

Here's an example. In episode 13 of Series 1 - 'The News' the programme utilised The Turtles 'Happy Together'

In isolation the lyrics may appear slightly sinister, but nobody had ever really stopped to consider that before given the upbeat nature of the song, and the psychedelic, colourful era in which it was released.

In this episode though, The Turtles version was replaced by this cover courtesy of an act called SPiN

And THAT is how you use music effectively to lift a piece from average to outstanding.
